How much horse power will i gain if i change the stock timing chain and gear in a stock ford 460?

i was told that in the mid 70's ford detuned the 460 big block by retarding the timing with the timing chain. is there any truth to this and if so how much horsepower is lost because of itHow much horse power will i gain if i change the stock timing chain and gear in a stock ford 460?Sometimes, the timing is retarded to improve top end horsepower sacrificing low end torque.

The timing is retarded as the chains and gears get worn.

There is, however, a secret, the timing chain does cost 5-10 HP in friction losses.

A timing belt will save a few of thes, and are available for the 429/460.

But in a stock, unmodified condition, you will not notice any gains.

Old Fart Ford Racer (with a bunch of tunnel rams and cams for 429's)How much horse power will i gain if i change the stock timing chain and gear in a stock ford 460?Generally speaking, you will move the torque and horsepower curve around a bit depending on whether you retard or advance the cam, but the total out put won't significantly change. How much horse power will i gain if i change the stock timing chain and gear in a stock ford 460?you will not get much out of it if anyHow much horse power will i gain if i change the stock timing chain and gear in a stock ford 460?Someone's pulling your leg. Either that or they flat don't know what they're talking about. The way the Cam itself is ground can change the lift and duration of the valve openings which can directly affect the horsepower and/or torque curve and rating. The cam gear, crank gear and chain set only control the revolution of the cam in relationship to the crankshaft. No matter who manufacturers a gear and chain set for a particular engine, the gear ratio will be the same. Change that ratio or tweak it a tooth or two and you'll have an engine that's a total mess, if it runs at all.How much horse power will i gain if i change the stock timing chain and gear in a stock ford 460?who ever told u that they are pulling ur leg bro dont do itHow much horse power will i gain if i change the stock timing chain and gear in a stock ford 460?I know what the person talking to you was trying to tell you. Order a timing chain and gears for an early 70's 429 4v motor and install them on the 460. This changes the valve timing slightly and makes a difference in the responsiveness and low end torque and horsepower ( moves your torque and horsepower lower on the rpm curve making it a better drive). I have done this on several 460's, and I highly recommend it but it will not give you an overall power gain just makes it a better power curve and more fun to drive ( slightly better on fuel too but only slightly).
